“FOUR BOYS”

V1
England 1960 things were looking down
Just fifteen years gone since the war
People didn’t venture far from their towns
Re-building lives so badly torn
Also hoping for their spirit to arise
Just like they rallied when Churchill called
Arm in arm they crushed the backbone of an evil son
Surviving when the odds were against them all
V2
The shipyard cities prospered for years and years
The workers toiled to dusk from dawn
The colours of the London streets were black and white and grey
The faces of the children so forlorn
An ember glowed beneath the streets of Liverpool
A rumble shook the docile neighbourhood
Just four boys trying to awaken the lives and hopes of a generation
Wracked by memories of depression
CHORUS
Awaken English sleeping souls
They cried one day
Take this core of energy
The music that they played
They grabbed the roots of the 50’s and they shaped themselves a sound
Unleased their love upon the world
The flag of hope was finally unfurled
V3
The cobblestone streets would clatter with the sound of childrens’ feet
Playing football in the rain
The churches’ bells would ring out long and loud
Which gave the feeling of a spirit restored again
A shroud was lifted from the face of English pride
A canopy of clouds had blown away
And then you’d hear their music play
And here’s what they’d say
CHORUS
Awaken English sleeping souls
They cried one day
Take this core of energy
The music that they played
They grabbed the roots of the 50’s and they shaped themselves a sound
Unleased their love upon the world
The flag of hope was finally unfurled
BRIDGE
Just when England looked forward
They spared a thought for the recent past
No not seekers of glory
Merely bound to their dutiful task
And they dreamed about
A change in the atmosphere
And seemed no doubt
Now that the skies were clear
Their hopes reached heights
Never to be doused again, again, again
And then you’d hear them singing
CHORUS
Awaken English sleeping souls
They cried cried one day
Take this core of energy
The music that they play
Well they grabbed the roots of the 50’s
And they shaped themselves a sound
Unleashed their love upon the worl
The flag of hope was finally unfurled
